Monitor Types

ipMonitor monitors resources via the following protocols and methods (listed alphabetically). Additional information for each Monitor type is available by selecting the Monitor Name.

Monitor Type Use to
Active Directory Windows 2000 Directory Services (LDAP Protocol) Tests the directory service's ability to perform search queries.
DNS-TCP Domain Name Service-Transmission Control Protocol Tests a DNS name server's ability to accept incoming sessions and respond using its secondary method of communication (TCP)
DNS-UDP Domain Name Service-User Datagram Protocol Tests a DNS name server's responsiveness in addition to its ability to respond using its primary (more efficient UDP) method of communication.
Drive Space Any drive share Monitors changes in available disk space.
IPMONITOR ipMonitor Performs an internal diagnostic of a second ipMonitor. Used in redundancy configurations.
EVENTS NT Event Log Monitor Scans specified NT Server for application & operating failures.
EXEC Executable File Executes an external program (passes any required parameters) and tests timing and exit code.
FILE Any file type Scans a specified file, monitoring for changes in file size.
FINGER Finger Information Server Monitors FINGER server software. Tests the service for availability and responsiveness.
FTP File Transfer Protocol Tests an FTP server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
GOPHER Menu driven front end to resource services such as anonymous FTP Monitors GOPHER server software testing the service for availability and responsiveness.
HTML / ASP HyperText Transfer Protocol Tests a Web server's ability to accept incoming sessions and construct a dynamic page or run a cgi script.
HTTP HyperText Transfer Protocol Tests a Web server's ability to accept incoming sessions and conduct a transaction.
IMAP4 Internet Message Access Protocol Tests an IMAP4 mail server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
IRC Internet Relay Chat Tests an IRC chat server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
Kerberos 5 Kerberos 5 Protocol Tests an authentication server's ability to serve security tickets.
LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Tests a directory server's ability to perform search queries.
NNTP Network News Transfer Protocol Tests a news server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
NOTES Lotus Notes (tm) Transport Protocol Tests the availability and responsiveness of Lotus Notes (tm) mail servers.
NTP Network Time Protocol Tests a network time protocol service's availability and responsiveness.
ODBC/SQL Open Database Connectivity Tests the ability to log into to an external database.
PING Packet InterNet Groper Tests the specified route between ipMonitor's host machine and an IP enabled computer or device.
POP3 Post Office Protocol Tests a POP3 mail server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
QA DNS Quality Assurance Domain Name Server Tests the Primary and Secondary DNS server's ability to respond to name lookups.
QA FTP Quality Assurance File Transfer Protocol Tests an FTP server's ability login a user and to transmit a requested file.
QA HTTP Quality Assurance HyperText Transfer Protocol Tests A Web server's ability to accept incoming sessions and transmit a requested page.
QA POP3 Quality Assurance Post Office Protocol Tests an SMTP mail server's ability to accept mail and distribute it to a POP3 mail server. This tests a POP3 mail server's ability to login users.
QA IMAP4 Quality Assurance Internet Message Access Protocol Tests an SMTP mail server's ability to accept mail and distribute it to a IMAP4 mail server. This tests an IMAP4 mail server's ability to login users.
QA LINK Quality Assurance Link Checker Tests a web page or a series of ecommerce links, validating the availability of each link.
QA SNMP Quality Assurance Simple Network Management Protocol Retrieves and acts on data from SNMP network devices, services and applications determined by administrator defined criteria.
QA SQL Quality Assurance Structured Query Language Tests the ability to log into to an external database ensuring that there are enough "connection handles" available. Tests to determine that a specified account can log into the database.
QA TRAP Quality Assurance SNMP Trap Receiver Receives incoming SNMP Traps from devices on the network. An alert will be triggered each time a trap arrives that matches a configured filter.
RADIUS Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service protocol Tests an authentication server's ability to perform an internal database lookup and respond to an authentication query.
RWHOIS Recursive Who Is Information Server Test a RWHOIS service for availability and responsiveness.
SERVICE Windows NT Service Monitor Communicates with a Windows NT machine to determine if a specified NT Service is running.
SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Tests an SMTP mail server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol Tests an SNMP device's ability to respond to an information request and its responsiveness.
SNPP Simple Network Pager Protocol Tests a pager server's ability to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
SPEED Speed or Bandwidth Monitor The Speed or Bandwidth Monitor tests available bandwidth or the speed of a transaction between two points on a network.
SSL Secure Socket Layer Protocol Tests a Web server's ability to accept incoming connections and conduct a secure transaction.
TELNET Remote Terminal Protocol Tests the ability of a TCP/IP based service to accept incoming sessions and its responsiveness.
WHOIS Who Is Information Server Tests the availability and responsiveness of a WHOIS service.
