ipMonitor 6.1
Add Network
< BackIndexNext >

ipMonitor includes an Add Network Wizard that scans the network in order to locate resources that can be monitored.

To quickly configure ipMonitor, select the Add Network option. The network will be scanned and a report will be generated listing all newly found resources from which you can select resources to add.

The Wizard needs to know what IP Address your network starts at and the extent of the network before it can begin scanning. Specify any network address that is within your network, and select the size of the network. A "Class C Network" has a size of 256 addresses, and starts at 0. A "Half Class C Network" has a size of 128 addresses, and starts at 0 or 128. A "Class D Network" has room for 1 address.

The Wizard also needs to know which Group it will use to store the resources it locates within, as well as, what monitor types to scan for, and whether to add monitors to the list that have already been configured.

While the Add Network Wizard detects network resources a progress bar is displayed indicating progress. Detection starts with a PING of every device and machine on the network followed by a probe to determine which monitor type will be assigned.

Notes regarding limitations:

  1. It is not possible to scan some monitor types because the data required for a successful test is inaccessible by ipMonitor.
  2. Enabling some monitor types can make the detection process longer because they communicate using UDP (a connectionless protocol). In this case, ipMonitor waits for replies from services that may not or don't exist. In this case a wait of a few minutes may occur for each IP Address and for each type of monitor scanned.
  3. This detection process will not work with environments where ICMP echo requests are discarded by firewalls and routers.
  4. SNMP agents will not be detected if the "Community" is not "public".
  5. RADIUS servers will not be detected unless they send "negative responses".
